Portland Chiropractic Recommendations

I’m looking for a chiropractor recommendation for today in PDX. Do you have one? The two I’d choose are either busy or out of town. Thanks!

wisdom

Think of yourself as a wing, a torch, a promise. Risk your significance, live, blossom, go forth and win. Let the world rejoice at your presence. Find those who have failed to flourish and whisper in their ear, “grow, grow.” Perhaps on this day, for the second time in the history of the world, you shall discover fire.” – Saleem Rana

Undriving comes to Portland on July 24th

We’ve invited the folks from Undriving to come to the Sunday, July 24th Portland Sunday Parkways in Downtown/NW Portland. If you’d like to volunteer to help people get their Undriver Licenses™, please get in touch – albertkaufman@gmail.com And, if you’d like to stop by and register for your Undriver License, please do.  They are super-cool and you’ll be the talk of your friends.

On July 24th we’ll be @ the entrance to the Waterfront Park Bowl, as the Sunday Parkways route turns from Columbia onto Naito Parkway. We’ll have two shifts for volunteers: 10:45-1:30 and 1:15-4:00

The volunteering will consist of helping people fill out a form about alternatives to driving they might choose; helping them dress up for their Undriver License photo, and having fun

I first ran into the Undriver License Station at the Green Festival in Seattle in 2010.  I stepped up and filled out a short form detailing my willingness to attempt to drive less.  The experience was thought-provoking and has led to me sell my car and share one with my partner.  I’m so convinced that Undriving will be a big hit that I’m volunteering to help organize a visit by the founders of Undriving (Seattle) and their licensing operation.  Please help me spread the word and come get your Undriver License!  Thanks!

time for Oregon to find a new type of state government

To the Editor of the Willamette Week:

I read your review of our state legislators, “The Good, Bad and Awful” and thank you for such an evened take.  I think the article points out the problem I’m seeing with all levels of government, and especially statewide.  We’re not able to handle the problems we’ve got with the system of government we’ve got in place.  On the City and National level we at least have people working for us full-time, but at the state level we ask the impossible and the results are an indication that things aren’t right.  We pay people peanuts to make important decisions infrequently.  This leads to gridlock in budgeting, horse-trading, favoritism, and an uphill battle getting good legislation passed when its opposed by any industry that’s affected.  Want to stop the banning of single-use bags?  Hire 4 lobbyists and that will do the trick.  Want to buy a legislator, that doesn’t seem to be that expensive for the timber industry, for instance.

It’s really high-time we think about changing the current system.  One thought would be to move more in the direction of hiring people to manage our state for us.  I’d rather my taxes go to the best managers and decision-makers out there and from your guide we can see that our money is not buying that – far from it.  We have a complex collection of millions of people, millions of acres, health, education, and land-use decisions.  Leaving this work to a part-time force of people with a wide-variety of ability levels and favors owed seems like the worst way to make important decisions that I can think of.  Some might say, “well, this is our democracy”.  I say, this is not good enough, especially considering the challenges ahead such as climate change.  Our legislature spent an entire session deliberating over a lot of issues and came up with very little.  How will they be at making quicker decisions in the future?  I think it’s time to seriously consider a different system to manage our state, now.

Sincerely, Albert Kaufman

My birthday is May 11th – garden celebration on May 14th, too!

My 50th birthday is on May 11th! I am organizing some times and places to celebrate – join me in person in Portlandia if you can!

Wednesday, May 11th – Albert turns 50! No big plans for the day yet, but in the evening… Ecstatic dance at the Village Ballroom’s Mindful Meltdown Dance at Dekum and 7th NE at 6:30-8:30pm ($8-$12 I believe) – DJ Chris Browne will be spinning the tunes and I’m doing the “intention” – living a bigger, bolder life! Also, I’ve invited those who are also turning 50 this year to come and join in the fun – so if that’s you, please get in touch!

Afterwards, join us for dinner at Queen of Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant @ 2413 NE Martin Luther King Blvd. (note restaurant change).  We’ll gather from 8:30-10pm. Also, you can just come and join us and not eat, that’s fine, too. Yay!

Then, on Saturday, May 14th, come to the new Birthday Garden, 3rd and Hancock NE. From 9am to 4pm we’ll use shovels and other implements of farming to build up some garden beds, shovel compost and turn a big lot into a community garden. I could use some help organizing the day – need someone to fetch a bbq from SE and perhaps others to help create a rain protection system (big tent? Tarp?) in case it rains. From 4-6pm we’ve reserved the Common Grounds Wellness Center on 33rd and Alberta, NE, so 40+ lucky people will get to soak together which should be a blast. I’m still working out the details of food and drink and live music for the day, but things are coming together.

7pm, Saturday, May 14th, healthy potluck dinner and party at The Happy Clam – 1823 NE 13th Ave.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
