Saying goodbye to an old friend: iBook G4

Today was the day I sent my iBook G4 back to the Mactory. I spent so many good moments with that machine that I was sad when I handed her over. She was a gift from my friend, James Curtis, an incredible luthier from Port Townsend, WA.

One day in about 2003 James called me up and asked if I needed a new laptop.  At the time I had an old Toshiba Satellite running Win98 and said “yes!” enthusiastically. He asked me the specs for my dream machine and as I was in a software lab testing Mac printing software, I asked the developers around me and they all suggested a Mac was in order.  Later that day a man dressed in brown entered the office looking for me and asked me to sign for a package.  I was thrilled and overwhelmed.  An officemate helped me install the extra RAM I’d asked for, and soon I was off and working on my new laptop.  My Win-machine went to a dancer in need here in PDX after being lent out to a good friend who found it too slow.  4 gig HD, after all :)

I’ll miss the iBook G4.  Very special.  My first Mac.    Bye!  I’ll miss you!

How to feel a lot better, quickly

Here’s a suggestion for how to feel better, quickly. Take a bowl and fill it with boiling water. Drop in 2-10 drops of eucalyptus oil. Sit in front of the bowl with a towel over your head for as long as you can sit still. Take a moment from talking to anyone and take deep breaths. If it gets too intense, take a break, but then come back to it and you’ll find that you can stay in the steam for quite a while. The longer you stay, the better you’ll feel – I recommend 3-5 minutes. Hope you feel better! Albert

An idea for stopping the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

my idea for stopping the oil flow in the Gulf. Take an empty oil tanker hull, cut off the top, turn upside down and guide to sit on top of the spill. the weight of the tanker hull will act like a giant cookie cutter and contain the oil flowing out of the spill. And, if more containment along the edges needs to happen, add mud along the seams.

Also, I’d recommend to the Feds that many new wetlands be created, trees planted, etc. as we prepare new breeding and migration spots for the birdlife that will need a new place nearby to nest and Winter over.

Hope that helps! Albert

Michael Moore’s top 20 picks for 2010

Michael Moore’s pick for top 20 movies in 2010

1. “Troubled Water” is from Norway and it is a work of art and great storytelling from the opening frame to its final fade to black. It tells the story of a young man who is paroled after spending time in prison and gets a job as a church organist. He claims to be innocent in the drowning of a child, but the boy’s mother won’t let it go.
2. “Everlasting Moments” – A wife in the early 20th century wins a camera and it changes her life (from Sweden).
3. “Captain Abu Raed” – This first feature from Jordan tells the story of an airport janitor who the neighborhood kids believe is a pilot.
4. “Che” – A brilliant, unexpected mega-film about Che Guevara by Steven Soderbergh.
5. “Dead Snow” – The scariest film I’ve seen in a while about zombie Nazis abandoned after World War II in desolate Norway.
6. “The Great Buck Howard” – A tender look at the life of an illusionist, based on the life of The Amazing Kreskin starring John Malkovich.
7. “In the Loop” – A rare hilarious satire, this one about the collusion between the Brits and the Americans and their illegal war pursuits.
8. “My One and Only” – Who woulda thought that a biopic based on one year in the life of George Hamilton when he was a teenager would turn out to be one of the year’s most engaging films.
9. “Whatever Works” – This was a VERY good Woody Allen film starring the great Larry David and it was completely overlooked.
10. “Big Fan” – A funny, dark film about an obsessive fan of the New York Giants with a great performance by the comedian Patton Oswalt.
11. “Eden Is West” – The legendary Costa-Gavras’ latest gem, ignored like his last brilliant film 4 years ago, “The Axe”.
12. “Entre Nos” – An mother and child are left to fend for themselves in New York City in this powerful drama.
13. “The Girlfriend Experience” – Steven Soderbergh’s second genius film of the year, this one set in the the post-Wall Street Crash era, a call girl services the men who brought the country down.
14. “Humpday” – Two straight guys dare each other to enter a gay porn contest — but will they go through with it?
15. “Lemon Tree” – A Palestinian woman has her lemon trees cut down by the Israeli army, but she decides that’s the final straw.
16. “Mary and Max” – An Australian girl and and elderly Jewish man in New York become pen pals in this very moving animated film.
17. “O’Horten” – Another Norwegian winner, this one about the final trip made by a retiring train conductor.
18. “Salt of This Sea” – A Palestinian-American returns to her family’s home in the West Bank, only to find herself caught up in the struggles between the two cultures.
19. “Sugar” – A Dominican baseball player gets his one chance to come to America and make it in the big leagues.
20. “Fantastic Mr. Fox” – A smart, adult animated film from Wes Anderson that at least got two nominations from the Academy.

How to start your day the Eecole way with a nutritious, delicious smoothie!

How to start your day the Eecole way with a nutritious, delicious smoothie!

Blend together
1 cup organic frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, recommended)
1 cup Hemp milk (cover the rest of the fruit with water)
1 TBS flax seeds (ground)
4 TBS Hemp Protein Powder
1 TBS almond butter
1 tsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp spirulina
1/2 tsp tumeric
A pinch of salt

Blend and serve – best enjoyed right after the smoothie is blended.

Why this smoothie is good for you: This is a great balanced smoothie with lots of protein to tide you over until lunch. Cinnamon helps control blood sugar, tumeric is a great anti-inflammatory, and all of that hemp serves up a dose of omega-3′s that keep your cholesterol in check.

Let’s work together to get your social networking game on!

Hello there,

I want to offer you my services. I have been spending the past two years helping people get their e-mail and social-networking games on. Whether it’s figuring out how to use the programs you have already, or branching into new territory, I can help you get going. I’m happy to work with beginners who don’t have a cleu, to those who are a bit more advanced but who would like to take the next step in learning how to swim in different pools and make bigger waves.

I am happy to work with you for U.S. or foreign currency on a sliding scale or possibly a bartering arrangement which includes some sort of home-cooked soup or a massage, firewood or a midnight road-trip to Las Vegas.

Yes, we will have fun together. Yes, we will both learn things.

OLCV ED

Today I applied for the Executive Director position with OLCV.  Here is what I wrote to them:

To the members of the OLCV Search Committee <EDsearchcommittee@olcv.org> :

I am applying for the position of Executive Director for the Oregon
League of Conservation Voters.  I have a long history of environmental
and legislative activism which I think will be a perfect fit with your
organization.

For the past 15 years I have been a tireless activist on numerous
levels – neighborhood, city, state, national, and international -
engaged in a wide range of issues.  These experiences have improved my
capacity to move progressive, environmental agendas and issues
forward.  From shutting down a neighborhood medical waste incinerator
in Seattle to leading lobbying efforts for increasing funding for
international family planning in Washington, DC, I have grown as an
activist and a leader.  I bring strong writing, organizing, media
outreach, volunteer management, membership, fundraising, technical,
and speaking skills to any effort I engage in.  I am well-connected in
Oregon and the Northwest with a monthly e-letter that I send to 2,000
people as well as active Facebook, Twitter, Linked In amongst other
social networking accounts with many connections.  I consider myself
well respected in the environmental and political communities in the
Pacific Northwest.
I bring skills to the table which OLCV does not appear to be
leveraging to the extent I believe possible – yet!  Presently, social
networking is being used increasingly by individuals and organizations
to successfully get their message out, fundraise and organize.  I
believe that OLCV, as the biggest Oregon environmental group, could
exert a significantly larger influence on the State by harnessing
these technologies, and am confident I would be effective and
successful leading the organization in that direction.  I also sense
that OLCV could be grown into a much bigger entity, through
fundraising, as well as capitalizing on the large numbers of talented
people who are available at this time in history to do great work.

Most importantly, I am dedicated to the work that OLCV does.  I
believe that change can come through electing good leaders and working
with them to write and pass progressive legislation.  My hope for the
next ten years is that we will see substantial increases in
environmental legislation in this state as we most certainly face
increasing pressures of population growth, water scarcity, species
loss, pollution, and the results of decisions that were made years ago
– such as the much needed cleaning of our waterways, and removal of
dams on many rivers.  I am committed, and always have been, to healing
this planet, and to me that means working doggedly and consistently in
a positive direction with our friends and future allies – those who
have not yet come to an understanding of our position.  Relationship
building is a key factor in the important work of OLCV, and I would
make that a centerpiece of my leadership.  The work of OLCV is part of
a long effort that will take many many years to achieve, and the best
way to get there will be to build relationships that are strong and
consistent.

I look forward to speaking with you about these ideas and potential
new tools for effective advancement of OLCV’s goals, and expanding the
scope and breadth of OLCV in a personal interview.  I have enclosed my
resume for your consideration and would be glad to provide you with
references and writing samples at your request.  I look forward to
hearing from you and also wish you the best in this process.  There
are likely scores of people who would make a great candidate for this
position, and I hope you pick the best person available, as I believe
OLCV’s work is the most important in Oregon.

Sincerely,

Albert Kaufman

Growthbusters Short

We can begin to voluntarily limit family size and start reducing world population now. Population reduction is an essential part of minimizing climate change, famine, poverty and ecosystem collapse. It is time we acknowledge population’s role in the sustainability equation and begin to implement truly sustainable population policies.

We produced this PSA specifically to submit to ABC News for their network television special, Earth 2100.
