Happy Interdependence Day

Yeah, KBOO!

Happy July 4th, 2016. I’m spending the day on my own. Taking Independence to mean me spending some time with me. It’s very sweet. Currently, I’m listening to the Blues Festival in Portland via KBOO, our awesome local community radio station. Give it a listen, https://kboo.com/fm – or 90.7 here in Portlandia.  Have a great day!

One thing I’m doing today is reading back through some old emails. I’m in November 2015. On a day I returned from visiting my family in Pennslyvannia. My Mom shared Beth Kephart’s blog with me in an email. My Mom’s been an incredible influence on me – she’s constantly offering me gems that she comes across.  Thanks, Mom!

Speaking of Mom – she’s with my Dad and friends watching the fireworks in RedHill, PA.  There was no cross in the bandshell when I was growing up (I wish the’d remove it).  Here’s a picture of the bandshell.  The fireworks display there was always great.

and this video from Mickey Hart of fireworks – is yummy!

Later that day, reading this. https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevenkotler/2015/02/06/the-acceleration-of-acceleration-how-the-future-is-arriving-far-faster-than-expected/

Turn off Your Car Horn – Less Beeping = Less Noise

Disconnect Your Horn

Here’s something that will improve all of our lives – lessen neighborhood noise. If you have a system where you click on a fob to lock your car and it makes your car beep – figure out how to change that to your lights flickering or learn some other method to lock and unlock your car so that everyone doesn’t have to listen to a car beeping every time you want to enter or exit the vehicle.

Sometimes this is a difficult thing to figure out – but ask your dealer or look at the car’s instructions. We’ve all gotten used to the convenience of this feature – but really, it’s an annoyance – especially if you live near where people come and park a lot – like a supermarket.

Feel free to like the Car Horn Disengagement Society fan page – and your comments are welcome below. Especially helpful would be ideas on how to collect information on how to adjust cars that are the worst offenders. My sense is that it’s VW’s, but I could be wrong.

6.21.16 – Update: How about this – people moving more quietly.. on purpose.. Wow.

And, an interesting article on the topic.

4.27.22 – Best resource ever on this topic!

DRIVE, SHE SAID

Hey, car-horn abusers: Try reading the manual next time

“It’s 2 a.m., a hot sultry night. With the humidity finally lifted a little, nothing feels better than having windows opened at last, ceiling fans stirring, and some of that long-awaited Canadian summer air breezing through.

That is, until your neighbour’s guests leave, and blast two long honks on their car horn to remind the people they just spent an hour saying goodbye to in the driveway – after spending eight hours in their backyard – that they are indeed leaving.

Why do people do this?

I do not expect rural quiet in an urban setting. Patio chatter, hot tub frolicking, all varieties of music mingling in the night air – all of this is woven into the quilt of city living. I’ll admit to appreciating when folks dial it back a bit by midnight – I lived with a veritable frat house backing onto mine a couple of years back and sat up most nights poised with a fire extinguisher, ever fearful their giant bonfires would set up a flaming maze of interconnected drought-ravaged hedges. They were terrible neighbours in most ways; but there is nothing quite as special as those who abuse their rights to a car horn.

As a rule, I find people who don’t read their car manuals end up not realizing just how many neat things their car can do. They’re missing out on some unique settings, important instructions, and a sense of control very much needed when their car starts flashing things and they make a desperate fumble through the glove box, chasing down an index that includes everything but what the car is currently doing.

It’s too bad, because many cars will allow you to disengage the horn when you lock it with the remote. This is usually a factory setting; the same way you change the seats and mirrors, you can change this. Locking your car and having the horn reassure you it is truly locked may be comforting. For the unwitting person standing next to your car, it can be startling. Especially if you’re a block locker – you hit your remote a block away from your car, as you perhaps enter the mall.

Horns should be used to warn of imminent danger. Their use should be a rarity. Instead, they’re being used increasingly to convey the fact that somebody has enraged you. The person who cut you off doesn’t give a damn; nailing your horn does not shoot darts into their tires to teach them a lesson, nor release a puff of lavender into your car to calm you down.

Why bother?

Spring 2016 – Saving Time – Use Facebook Less

Spring Cleaning: How to use Facebook less.

Happy Spring. Like many, I find myself using Facebook at lot of time when I have other things to do.  My simple hack is to have Facebook open on one browser and the rest of my productivity tools (Hello, WordPress) open on another. This has led to using Facebook a whole lot less. Many of us learned to use Facebook for marketing our businesses back when it was free and reach was a real thing. Now that you have to pay to play, and even that is an unreliable indicator of any kind of usefulness, that which Facebook is useful for has shifted. I still do think that Facebook is useful – especially for networking and keeping in touch with others. Organizing things also goes pretty well – groups, events – still are great ways to gather people for a cause.  Try putting Facebook in it’s own browser and having the rest of your world happening on another and see what you think – I’d love to hear your thoughts below.

2.6.18 – Update: I took Facecrack off my phone (as well as Instagram) = this has led to about 70% decrease in my use of Facecrack – I highly recommend this move!

In other news, it was quite a weekend. I attended the first ever Cultivation Classic.

Cultivation Classic

Spring into Cultivation Classic

According to Jeremy Plumb, one of the organizers: “This competition welcomes growers who can demonstrate a commitment to organic production methods, moving toward a regenerative approach,” said Jeremy Plumb, owner of Newcleus Nurseries and Farma dispensary in Portland. “This competition regards the quality of the process used, as well as the quality of the product.

I learned a ton. I met great people. My Congressman, Earl Blumenauer was there. I’m still tickled by how incredible the event was – really great speakers; good food; people dedicated to organic; good music. I can’t wait till the next one.  Here’s info about the winning strains

Then, there’s global warming. You just can’t escape it.  We just had the warmest April in Portland’s history. I still believe the answer is lessening the number of people on the planet, gradually.  I can’t believe how little the topic of human population growth in regards to climate change is discussed. I had a talk with a friend this past weekend who was arguing that US populatin growth is just fine. We’re the fastest growing population of any developed country and our consumption levels are over the top – so, hello warmest month ever, we’ve been expecting you.

I’ve been inspired, lately, to make more content and to share more of my thinking with the world. So, that’s what this is about. Thanks to Tim Ferris and Seth Godin and Michael Katz, some of the people who put out great content on a regular basis. I hope to fit into this tradition 🙂  I used to write a whole lot more – my newsletters used to be little tomes and as the trend has changed to shorter format, so have I.

That’s it for today. Have a great Spring! I hope life is treating you well. Feel free to leave comments below and to share this post on the social network of your choice!

Hello,
If you’re a small business, non-profit, government organization or have a film or other project you’d like to promote, my upcoming classes on May 18th will go over the best tools to use for marketing – email marketing and social media.  I hope you’ll attend.  They’re free and I’ve been teaching small businesses how to market themselves for the past 8 years.  I’ll be teaching how to keep in touch with clients and customers and keep you top of mind all year long.
https://albertideation.com/coast to learn more and register for each class – here’s a little synopsis
On May 18th the morning class will go into why subject lines are so important and the features that go into writing great ones. If your material is not opened then noone will get to experience your greatness.  There are tools out there that can help with this.
After lunch I’ll go into autoresponders.  That’s probably my favorite topic of all as I’ve been creating autoresponder series since I learned about them last year. They’re a great way to help clients and customers learn about your business in a systematic way that benefits you (they are sent and forget) and your customers.
Please share this notice with someone you know whose business or effort could benefit from some marketing help.
Once again, please register for any class here: https://albertideation.com/coast
Thank you!
